Many of the grand monuments at Woodlawn are inspired by antiquity. This one is in the form of an open, round Greek temple, called a Monopteros. Mono meaning ‘one’ and Pteros meaning ‘wing,’ as in PTEROdactyl. 🙂
Unfinished monuments are a common Victorian-theme in the Midwest, and there are many at Woodlawn. It’s one of the many ways to symbolize a life cut short.
